Ford Australia marks ten years since end of local manufacturing
Ford Australia marks a decade since it ceased local vehicle manufacturing on October 7, 2016. The final Ford Falcon and Ford Territory models were produced at the Broadmeadows plant north of Melbourne, ending over 90 years of manufacturing history in the country that began with the Model T in Geelong in 1925.
Throughout its history, Ford produced several iconic Australian vehicles, including the Coupe Utility, the Cortina, and the Mazda-based Ford Laser. Notable performance models include the 1971 XY Phase III GT-HO Falcon and various Tickford and Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) models. While local assembly has ended, Ford continues to operate a design centre and maintains vehicle engineering capabilities in Australia, with a current focus on models like the Ford Ranger.
