Ford CEO warns Europe is a 'lost cause' against Chinese EV rivals

Ford CEO Jim Farley has warned that Europe is a 'lost cause' in the competitive race against Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. Speaking at the Automotive News Congress, Farley noted that while the United States must remain extremely cautious about Chinese market entry, Europe has already lost the battle due to the rapid expansion of Chinese brands.

Chinese manufacturers have significantly increased their presence, with market share in Europe reaching 12 percent in August 2026. This growth follows a massive surge in Chinese exports, which are projected to rise from 3 million in 2022 to 12 million by 2026. Chinese companies hold advantages in battery supply chains, software, and production costs.

Despite these warnings, Ford is pursuing a dual strategy of competition and cooperation. The company has partnered with Geely to develop an electric vehicle platform for the European market and is collaborating with CATL on battery production in Michigan. This approach highlights the tension between resisting Chinese dominance and utilizing their technological and economic advantages to remain viable.
