Ford EcoBoost engines under NHTSA investigation for safety risks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Ford's 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engines. The probe focuses on approximately 135,000 vehicles produced between 2014 and 2021, specifically affecting Fiesta, Focus, and EcoSport models.

The investigation centers on the engine's oil-bath belt, which may deteriorate prematurely. Debris from the belt can clog the oil pump pickup, leading to loss of engine power or sudden engine failure while driving. According to NHTSA reports, drivers have experienced oil pressure warnings followed by immediate power loss.

Data indicates these issues typically manifest around 130,000 km. In 98% of analyzed cases, the belt failed before Ford's original recommended replacement interval of 240,000 km. Although Ford later adjusted the replacement limit to 160,000 km, current findings suggest this may still be insufficient to prevent failure.
