Ford Escort Sedan: Challenges in the 1990s Brazilian market

The Ford Escort Sedan faced significant challenges in the Brazilian mid-size sedan market during the late 1990s. The model's history is closely tied to the Autolatina era, a partnership between Ford and Volkswagen. Before the Escort Sedan was established, Ford produced the Verona starting in 1989, which shared a mechanical base with the Escort but maintained a distinct identity until the partnership ended in 1996.

Following the dissolution of Autolatina, Ford launched a new generation of the Escort in late 1996, adopting the Escort Sedan name to align with international markets. While the vehicle featured modern European-inspired design and a refined 1.8L Zetec engine producing 115 hp, it struggled to compete against established rivals like the Chevrolet Vectra and Volkswagen Polo Classic.

In an attempt to increase competitiveness and accessibility, Ford introduced a 1.6L Rocam engine version in 1999. However, sales remained low. The model's market performance was further hindered by reported mechanical issues involving the front suspension and electrical systems, eventually paving the way for the arrival of the Ford Focus.
