Ford Fathom electric pickup prototypes undergo desert testing

Ford is advancing development of the Fathom, a mid-size electric pickup truck scheduled for a 2027 release. Camouflaged prototypes were recently spotted in Las Vegas following hot-weather testing in the Nevada desert. CEO Jim Farley confirmed the vehicle's name and its role as a new mid-size electric offering.

The Fathom is designed to be highly affordable, with a projected starting price of approximately US$28,350. This cost-efficiency is driven by the vehicle's use of Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. The truck's design appears to prioritize aerodynamics and urban utility, featuring a crew-cab body, a relatively short load bed, and aerodynamically optimized wheels.

Production of the Fathom will take place at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky. Ford has invested approximately US$5 billion to renovate the facility, transitioning it from gasoline-powered vehicle production to a specialized system for the UEV platform. This overhaul aims to enable large-scale manufacturing of electric vehicles starting in 2027.
