Ford files patent for vehicles to autonomously relocate from threats

Ford has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a vehicle system capable of detecting danger while parked and moving itself to a safer location without a driver.

The technology utilizes a vehicle's existing sensor suite to monitor for suspicious activity, such as individuals repeatedly peering into windows, vehicles circling the area, or a parking lot becoming unexpectedly deserted. The system could also detect environmental threats, such as rising floodwaters, and relocate the vehicle to higher ground.

To combat theft, the patent describes several defensive maneuvers. A vehicle could park tightly between two walls or other cars to prevent wheel theft, or utilize air suspension to lower the chassis and protect components like catalytic converters. The system is also designed to protect cargo in trucks and pickups by identifying and reacting to potential theft risks.
