Ford to return to WRC in 2028 to drive European vehicle development
Ford is set to return to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) as an official factory team in 2028. Partnering with M-Sport, the company intends to use the competition as a laboratory to develop its next generation of consumer vehicles.
By 2029, Ford plans to debut a new competition car inspired by an unreleased production model. This strategy aims to infuse its European lineup with rally-inspired DNA, focusing on performance, durability, and driving dynamics. The manufacturer has announced plans to launch five new multi-energy models—including electric and hybrid options—in Europe by the end of 2029.
Key upcoming models include a B-segment electric city car expected in 2028 and a compact SUV based on the Bronco family, which is slated for production at the Valencia plant in Spain. The initiative follows a significant decline in Ford's European sales volume and is designed to differentiate the brand through distinct design and character.
