Ford targets 2027 production for Fathom electric pickup

Ford is on track to begin production of the Fathom, a midsize electric pickup truck, at its overhauled Louisville Assembly Plant in 2027. The vehicle will be the first to utilize Ford’s new Universal EV (UEV) platform and a redesigned production system.

Developed by a team led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke, the new manufacturing process replaces the traditional continuous assembly line with a three-branch system. This method involves assembling the front and rear sections separately using large single-piece aluminum castings, while a third branch builds the structural battery integrated with the interior components. This approach aims to reduce the number of individual parts and increase production speed by up to 40% compared to current plant operations.

The Fathom is expected to start at a price of $28,350 in the United States. It is designed to offer a combination of utility and passenger space, featuring a flexible cargo bed and technology such as BlueCruise assisted driving and bidirectional charging. The modernization of the Louisville facility is part of a broader investment strategy that includes the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan.
