Ford recalls Mustang Mach-E over battery module defect

Ford Motor Company has announced a recall for 86 units of the 2023-2025 Mustang Mach-E equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The recall is due to a defect in the replacement Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).

The faulty module may incorrectly initialize the battery’s State of Health (SoH) at 100 percent, regardless of its actual condition. This error can lead to inaccurate State of Charge (SoC) readings on the instrument panel, potentially causing the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly.

Furthermore, inaccurate SoH calculations could increase lithium plating within the battery cells during DC fast charging. Severe lithium plating poses a risk of thermal runaway and potential vehicle fires, though Ford reports no accidents have occurred due to this issue yet. Ford will provide repairs and module replacements free of charge through its official dealer network.
