Foreign accounts drive majority of online engagement regarding UK unrest

An analysis of posts on X regarding the June unrest in Belfast and Southampton reveals that more than half of the accounts generating significant engagement were located outside the United Kingdom. Of 8,672 accounts whose posts reached over 1,000 views, only 45.3% were identified as being based in Britain.

The United States accounted for 16.8% of these accounts, while 4.5% were from Ireland and approximately 25% originated from other European countries. Notably, seven of the 12 most-read posts concerning the incidents came from US-based accounts, including Elon Musk and various right-wing commentators.

The data indicates that many of these international accounts were not merely observing, but were actively promoting narratives regarding immigration, race, and social collapse. Nearly one-third of the 43,000 posts analyzed contained racist or anti-immigration sentiments, and almost 10% of posts related to Belfast included calls for violence, vigilantism, or paramilitary action. Experts suggest these international actors use local tragedies as “strategic events” to portray Western nations as being in a state of social collapse.
