Foreign hotel chains boost upscale hotel segment across Spain
The Hoteles Mediterráneo group operates three four‑star beachfront properties in Peñíscola, offering family‑focused amenities such as a water park, children’s club and animation programmes, as well as couple‑oriented spa and rooftop terrace facilities.
Across Spain, foreign hotel chains are concentrating their growth in the upscale (four‑star) segment. Data from 45 groups show 700 establishments and 35,422 rooms under 27 upscale brands. Hyatt Hotels Corporation leads with 31 hotels and 8,851 rooms via its Alua Hotels & Resorts and Dreams Resorts & Spa brands. Marriott International follows with 55 hotels and 6,440 rooms across AC Hotels, Aloft and Four Points by Sheraton. German TUI Hotels operates 21 hotels with 5,023 rooms, while Thailand‑based Minor Hotels Europe & Americas runs 56 hotels (NH Hotels and Avani) totaling 3,854 rooms. Other notable players include Germany’s Dertour Hotels & Resorts with 7 hotels and 2,008 rooms. The expansion is especially pronounced in coastal locations and includes a growing all‑inclusive model imported from the United States and the Caribbean.
