Foreign Minister Wadephul threatens Russia with new sanctions

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has intensified his rhetoric against Moscow following an unproductive meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the UN General Assembly in New York. Wadephul condemned President Vladimir Putin’s actions as a ‘brutal war of attrition,’ specifically citing recent missile attacks that have caused numerous civilian casualties in Ukraine, including children.

In response to the escalation, Wadephul announced that the European Union has provided an additional 1.2 billion euros for air defense systems in Ukraine. He further stated that efforts are underway in Brussels to finalize new, extensive sanctions targeting Russia’s war economy, as well as specific individuals and companies supporting the conflict.
