Foreign retail chains expand in Poland, impacting local businesses
Foreign retail chains are expanding rapidly across Poland, impacting local businesses. In Olsztyn, the presence of international discounters and hypermarkets is growing, with 21 Biedronka locations, nine Lidl stores, three Aldi outlets, as well as Netto, Kaufland, and Auchan already operating in the city.
This expansion coincides with the closure of long-standing local shops, service points, and studios. While foreign competition is a significant factor, local entrepreneurs also face pressure from shopping malls and the rise of e-commerce. This trend of international chains replacing local businesses has also been observed in several smaller towns within the Warmia-Masuria region.
In Olkusz, the expansion continues with a new Kaufland supermarket nearing completion in the BIG retail park. Construction is largely finished, and the facility is currently undergoing inspections and the installation of shelving and refrigeration units in preparation for its opening.
