Foreign toll claims require careful verification by drivers

Drivers traveling abroad may receive toll payment claims weeks, months, or even years after their trip. According to the Auto Club Europa (ACE), these claims can be sent to residents in Germany by road operators or private debt collection agencies.

To manage these claims, the ACE recommends cross-referencing the demand with travel routes and payment proofs. It is important to respond in writing to any unjustified claims within the specified deadlines. Errors in license plate recognition, such as issues with special characters or umlauts, can lead to incorrect registrations of unpaid tolls.

Failure to pay can result in additional fees or official sanctions. For example, in France, unpaid tolls may incur a fine of up to 375 euros in addition to the original toll amount. Drivers are advised to research toll systems, payment methods, and deadlines before traveling and to retain all receipts and electronic payment confirmations.
