Forensic technology resolves decades-old murder and wrongful conviction cases

Advances in forensic technology have recently resolved two long-standing criminal cases involving wrongful convictions or cold cases in China and the United States.

In Beijing, China, a double murder from 2004 involving Li Hong and her 15-year-old son was solved after two decades. Investigators had previously struggled with a nearly invisible blood fingerprint found on a light switch. In 2022, improved fingerprint recognition technology allowed police to identify the suspect, a man named Liu, who lived near the victims. Liu was executed on July 9 of this year.

In the United States, Cathy Woods was exonerated after serving 35 years for the 1976 murder of Michelle Mitchell in Reno, Nevada. Woods, who suffered from severe mental illness, had been convicted based on statements made while she was in a psychiatric hospital. The case was reopened in 2014 when DNA testing on a cigarette butt found at the crime scene linked the murder to Rodney Halbower, an inmate in Oregon, rather than Woods.
