Global wildfire trends show increasing severity and devastation

On World Forest Fire Prevention Day, global reports highlight a shifting landscape in wildfire dynamics. In Spain, experts note a trend of fewer but more devastating fires. Data from Greenpeace and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) indicate that while the total number of incidents may decrease, the surface area burned is increasing due to climate change and rural abandonment, which leads to an accumulation of combustible vegetation.

To combat this, regions like Castilla y León are investing in advanced surveillance, including a network of cameras designed to detect movement and fire from up to 30 kilometers away. In France, emphasis is placed on the need for winter land management, such as clearing dry undergrowth and traditional grazing, to mitigate risks before the summer heat.

In Lebanon, the situation is compounded by conflict. Local authorities in the Bekaa Valley have accused Israel of using drones to disperse flammable materials, causing extensive damage to forests and agricultural land. Firefighters in these areas face additional hazards from unexploded munitions amidst the burning vegetation.
