Forest fires can create their own weather systems

Scientific research indicates that intense forest fires do more than react to weather conditions like heat, wind, and drought; they can actively create their own localized weather systems. According to Yunyao Li from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas at Arlington, large-scale fires impact the atmosphere through four primary mechanisms.

First, the massive release of heat creates powerful upward air currents. As the air heats up, it becomes lighter and rises rapidly, which can lead to the formation of fire whirls or fire tornadoes. These phenomena, while smaller in scale than traditional hurricanes, are fueled directly by the fire and can make the spread of flames extremely dangerous.

Second, fires can generate their own storm clouds. The rising air carries hot gases, smoke, and water vapor released from burning vegetation. As this moisture rises and cools, it condenses into clouds. Third, these fire-induced clouds can lead to thunderstorms and fire-caused lightning. Finally, the transport of smoke over hundreds or thousands of kilometers can alter precipitation and lightning patterns far from the original site.
