Wildfires raging in southwest France’s Gironde department and in central‑eastern Spain (near Madrid, Ávila and Castellón) have burned more than 120,000 hectares. In Gironde alone about 42,000 hectares have been lost, 240 homes destroyed, while the fires near Madrid have consumed roughly 77,000 hectares.

The blazes have displaced over 300,000 people – about 220,000 in France and more than 100,000 in Spain – and prompted the deployment of thousands of firefighters, police, army personnel and aerial assets. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has supplied aircraft and helicopters from dozens of member states; Turkey has sent two firefighting planes, and additional support has arrived from Greece, Italy, Portugal and other countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Bordeaux and pledged extra resources, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the situation the worst challenge since World War II. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that the fire is “extremely intense and unpredictable”, noting the formation of pyrocumulonimbus clouds. Economic damage includes the evacuation of more than 13,000 businesses and widespread disruption to transport and tourism.
