Forest Fires Ravage Regions in Peru and Bolivia

During the recent long weekend, massive forest fires burned extensive areas of vegetation and farmland in Peru's Cusco region. In the Quispicanchi district of Quiquijana, a blaze sparked by an uncontrolled agricultural burn on July 27 spread rapidly due to dry grass, high temperatures and strong winds, threatening local biodiversity. Simultaneously, a second fire in the San Salvador district of Calca destroyed large swaths of natural land and crops. Emergency brigades eventually contained both incidents, while the Peruvian National Police opened investigations to find those responsible.

In Bolivia's Santa Cruz department, three active wildfires in the Chiquitanía region have scorched more than 30,000 hectares of dry forest and grassland, endangering indigenous communities and critical ecosystems. The volunteer group "Alas Chiquitanas" reported the fires advancing on multiple fronts, with the regional emergency operations center and Bolivian Navy deploying brigades to aid firefighting efforts. The fires threaten the Chiquitano Dry Forest, a key water and climate regulator for South America.
