Forest fires trigger major restoration efforts in Spain and Peru

Regions in Spain and Peru are facing significant ecological and economic challenges following severe forest fires. In Spain, the Community of Madrid has launched a forest restoration plan for the Sierra Oeste following a major fire that forced the evacuation of 50,000 people and destroyed approximately 100 homes. The initiative involves an investment of nearly 25 million euros between 2026 and 2030 to address soil loss, pest control, and infrastructure repair.

In Peru, the Junín region is suffering from approximately 45 fires this year, affecting over 6,000 hectares of shrubs and grasslands. Driven by drought and uncontrolled agricultural burning, these fires have devastated livestock grazing lands and destroyed native plant species in conservation areas like Rumichurco. Additionally, high-level fires in the Ene River basin have consumed nearly 1,000 hectares of primary forest, threatening wildlife habitats and disrupting migratory patterns.
