Forest management concerns rise in Prokletije and Maksimir
In the Prokletije National Park, the Association of Wood Processors has warned of potential forest destruction due to bark beetle infestations. The association claims that authorities have failed to implement necessary sanitary logging to remove diseased and broken trees, allowing the infestation to spread across approximately 16,000 hectares of coniferous forest. They noted that jurisdictional disagreements between forestry experts and nature protectors have delayed effective responses.
In Croatia, Croatia Forests (Hrvatske šume) has issued a safety warning for visitors to Maksimir Park. Workers are currently conducting cleanup operations to remove wood debris left by severe storms in March. The organization advised citizens to stay away from machinery and marked work zones to avoid injury, stating that the remediation efforts in the northern part of the park are expected to continue through October.
