Forest restoration initiatives advance in Paraguay and Guatemala

Itaipu Binacional is advancing a new phase in forest landscape restoration by focusing on the recovery of the understory. Through its Environmental Management Superintendency, the entity is incorporating native shrub and herbaceous species to increase the structural and floristic complexity of restored forests. The project aims to restore ecological functions within the Atlantic Forest of the Upper Paraná. To support this, the Binacional's Forest Nursery is expanding its production to include these native species for both institutional restoration and ex situ conservation.

In Guatemala, the National Institute of Forests (Inab), supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is establishing a Regional Certified Seed Bank in San Cristóbal, Totonicapán. This center will serve as a hub for collecting and distributing high-quality vegetative material to support reforestation and environmental conservation in the western region. The initiative seeks to ensure biological quality, year-round seed availability, and the preservation of native species. This project will provide technical support for national incentive programs such as PINPEP and PROBOSQUE to promote resilient forest masses.
