Forest Stewardship Council promotes sustainable management in Congo

During the 2026 Forest Week held in Brazzaville from September 21 to 27, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) emphasized the necessity of promoting sustainable forest management to preserve ecosystems. Under the theme ‘Make a gesture for the forests,’ the event brought together FSC representatives and officials from the Ministry of Forest Economy to discuss forest certification and responsible resource management.

FSC representatives, including De Souza Feujio and Stevie Ruchelle Sianard Bidjoua, highlighted that FSC certification is a rigorous standard based on economic, social, and environmental pillars. The organization aims to mitigate climate and biodiversity crises by ensuring forests are managed responsibly.

In the Congo Basin, approximately 50 million hectares are designated for forest production, with 25 million hectares having approved management plans. Currently, nearly 7 million hectares in the region hold FSC certification. The campaign underscores the vital role of forests in climate regulation, soil protection, and supporting the livelihoods of over 1.6 billion people globally.
