Forester Attila Kósa Stops Forest Fire in Hungary's Kiskunság, Hospitalized with Smoke Inhalation

Attila Kósa, a district forester for KEFAG Kiskunsági Erdészeti és Faipari Zrt., detected rising smoke in the Kiskunság region and immediately sought the fire’s location. Despite weak mobile signal, he alerted the fire brigade and, using a shovel and sand, created a firebreak to protect a nearby 60‑hectare stand of young forest. His actions prevented the blaze from spreading further.

During the effort Kósa inhaled a large amount of smoke, became exhausted, lost consciousness in his vehicle, and was taken to hospital with smoke‑inhalation poisoning. The incident highlights the heightened fire risk during the current drought and heat, prompting warnings about careless cigarettes or unattended fires.
