Forestry challenges and hunting operations reported in Germany

In Gernsheim, the local environmental committee reported a financial deficit of nearly 30,000 euros for the forest management budget, marking the third consecutive year of losses. Forestry official Klaus Velbecker attributed the deficit to reduced timber sales caused by restrictions related to African Swine Fever, as well as the negative impacts of climate change and pests. The forest is also subject to strict conservation regulations as a designated FFH area, complicating the removal of deadwood.

In Lower Saxony, the Wolfenbüttel forestry office has announced a large-scale hunting operation in the Giebelheide and Joneck forest areas scheduled for October 31, 2026. To ensure safety from wildlife and hunting dogs, a full closure of the B 244 federal highway between Rühen and Parsau will be implemented from 09:00 to 14:00. The operation aims to prevent wildlife diseases, specifically targeting the reduction of wild boar populations to combat African Swine Fever, and to protect young tree growth from overgrazing.
