Forestry volunteer accused of starting nine wildfires in Piedmont
A 39-year-old resident of Peveragno, who serves as a volunteer for the Anti-Forest Fire (AIB) Corps in the Piedmont region, is under investigation for allegedly starting nine wildfires last summer.
The fires occurred between the Monregalese area and Valle Pesio, affecting the municipalities of Chiusa di Pesio, Peveragno, Villanova Mondovì, and Pianfei. The incidents took place between Easter and late August, destroying approximately 2 hectares of woodland by exploiting extreme drought and high temperatures.
Following an investigation by the Carabinieri Forestale of Mondovì, which utilized field surveys and video surveillance analysis, the suspect faces charges of intentional forest arson. He may face enhanced penalties for violating his duties related to fire prevention and active firefighting services.
