Major U.S. banks report mixed Q3 earnings amid economic uncertainty

Major U.S. banks have reported mixed third-quarter earnings, highlighting a period of economic resilience tempered by macroeconomic uncertainty. JPMorgan Chase reported a net income of $15.3 billion, a 6% increase year-over-year, though its earnings per share of $5.57 fell short of analyst expectations of $5.93. CEO Jamie Dimon noted that while business investment and consumer spending remain strong, risks such as large fiscal deficits, persistent inflation, and geopolitical instability persist.

Other major institutions showed varied results. Citigroup saw a significant 40% increase in net income to $5.245 billion, while Goldman Sachs experienced a sharp rise in stock-trading revenue. Wells Fargo also reported increased profits compared to the previous year. Collectively, the four largest U.S. banks earned nearly $105 billion in the first nine months of 2026.

In response to emerging technology, JPMorgan Chase announced it is blocking external AI agents, such as Meta’s Muse, from directly accessing customer accounts to mitigate security risks and potential liability issues regarding unauthorized financial transactions.
