Formal employment grows in Sonora and Ciudad Juárez
Recent data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) indicates growth in formal employment across parts of northern Mexico during September 2026.
In the state of Sonora, 5,315 formal jobs were created, bringing the total number of insured workers to 649,955. This represents a monthly increase of 0.8%. The capital, Hermosillo, saw a 1.2% rise in formal employment, adding 3,282 positions. The primary driver in Sonora was the agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing, and hunting sector, which added 3,656 jobs, a 7.5% increase.
In Ciudad Juárez, the border city generated 1,049 new jobs in September, following 832 jobs added in August. This two-month trend marks a recovery after a significant period of job losses starting in June 2023. While the manufacturing industry (maquiladoras) reported a loss of 163 jobs, growth was driven by the commerce sector with 674 new positions, followed by business services, communal and social services, and construction.
