Tahir Hussain convicted in Ankit Sharma murder case
A Delhi court (Karkardooma) on 13 July 2026 convicted former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain and four co‑accused – Nazim, Qasim, Anas and Javed – for the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma. Sharma was killed during the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots and his body was later recovered from a drain. The court found the five guilty of murder, rioting, promoting enmity and related offences, while acquitting them of the criminal‑conspiracy charge. Six other accused were cleared of all charges. The judgment follows a lengthy investigation by the Delhi Police Crime Branch and a trial that began in 2023. Sentencing has not yet been fixed.
The verdict sparked immediate political reactions. The BJP accused the AAP and Congress of shielding rioters, while the AAP said Hussain had been suspended from the party shortly after the FIR was filed. Hussain broke down in court after the judgment was read. The case stems from the 2020 riots that left 53 dead and more than 500 injured, making it one of the most high‑profile prosecutions arising from that communal violence.
