Former AFL star Nicky Winmar convicted of assault in Victoria court
Former Australian Football League player Nicky Winmar, 60, was found guilty of two common‑law assault offences and one unlawful assault after a Bendigo Magistrates’ Court hearing. The magistrate, Trieu Huynh, said the unnamed woman was a credible and truthful witness and sentenced Winmar for dragging her by the hair and repeatedly smashing her head against a wooden door in Cohuna, northern Victoria, on 14 May 2025. He was acquitted of a fourth charge of intentionally causing injury because the woman’s pain did not meet the legal threshold. Winmar appeared in person, expressed remorse, and will face a pre‑sentence hearing. The former St Kilda star, the first Aboriginal player to reach 200 AFL games, is also co‑leading a landmark racism class‑action against the league.
