Former Benue councillor remanded for alleged assault and attempted homicide

Daniel Ujah, a 43-year-old former councillor for the Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area, has been remanded to the Otukpo Correctional Centre. The remand follows charges of criminal trespass, intimidation, assault, causing grievous hurt, and attempted culpable homicide.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on August 28, 2026, when Ujah allegedly entered the compound of Amina Iduh in Akwutulo, Awume. The prosecution alleges that Ujah beat the woman and pushed her into a fire, causing bodily injuries and burning her clothing. The victim was subsequently hospitalized in Onyagede for treatment.

During his arraignment at the Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo, Ujah pleaded not guilty to all charges. A request for bail made by his counsel was opposed by the prosecuting officer, Inspector Nancy Alechenu. Magistrate Hasia Garuba ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody, and the case has been adjourned until September 22, 2026.
