Former Birmingham Officer Gregory Thompson Arrested on Child Sex Charges

Gregory Thompson, a 38‑year‑old former officer of the Birmingham Police Department, was taken into custody on Thursday in Jefferson County, Alabama. He faces charges of first‑degree rape, first‑degree sexual abuse and traveling to meet a minor for an illegal sexual act. Thompson is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail.

The investigation, conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, stems from allegations that the offenses occurred while Thompson was employed by the Birmingham Police Department between 2018 and 2026. He resigned from the force prior to his arrest. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett released a statement emphasizing the department’s commitment to accountability, improved training, and early‑intervention systems in response to the case.
