Former Boston Children’s Hospital Nurse John Tam Indicted for Sexual Assault of Teenage Patients
John Tam, a 33‑year‑old former nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital, was indicted on eight criminal counts: four for assault and battery on persons over 14 and four for indecent assault and battery by a healthcare practitioner. Prosecutors say the alleged assaults occurred in September 2022 and January 2025 while the victims, teenage boys aged 15 and 16, were emerging from anesthesia after surgeries. Tam allegedly touched the patients’ genitals as they woke, aiming to avoid detection.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden warned that the incidents might not be isolated and urged any parents who suspect their child was a patient of Tam to contact authorities. Assistant District Attorney Madeline Berry described the actions as “cowardly, heinous acts.” Tam previously worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and UMass Memorial Medical Centers in Worcester and Marlborough.
