Ex‑Botafogo striker Tassio Maia dos Santos killed in Rio wall collapse during storm
On 29 July 2024 a severe windstorm hit Rio de Janeiro, producing gusts over 100 km/h and, in some reports, up to 120 km/h. In the Santa Teresa neighbourhood a wall of the historic Mansão Alvite event venue collapsed onto two workers, killing former Botafogo forward Tássio Maia dos Santos, 41, and his colleague Vandré Cordeiro da Silva, 43. Security‑camera footage captured the moment the structure fell, also striking a parked car.
Botafogo released a public statement expressing condolences to the families. The storm generated at least 185 separate incidents across the state, including fallen trees, power outages and damage to infrastructure. The victims were buried at Rio’s Catumbi Cemetery on 31 July 2024.
The incident was widely reported in Brazil and abroad, highlighting the lethal combination of extreme weather and structural failure.
