Former Brazil Prosecutor Ana Girala Sentenced to 7 Years for Extortion and Bribery

A Brazilian court sentenced former public prosecutor Ana Girala to seven years and three months in prison after finding her guilty of running an extortion and bribery scheme within the Ministry of Public in San Lorenzo. The panel of judges—Yolanda Morel, Ana Rodríguez and Karina Cáceres—also handed prison terms to former fiscal staff Griselda Acha (six years and six months), Christi Magalí Ortega (four years), lawyer Marco Velazco (two years and six months) and lawyer Liz Martínez (three years and six months). Girala was convicted of prevarication, extortion as a co‑author, attempted extortion, and aggravated passive bribery, using her position to direct cases to trusted lawyers and to obtain illicit financial benefits, undermining public trust in the justice system. The court affirmed the existence of a criminal organization operating inside the prosecutor’s office.

All sentenced individuals will remain in custody under the court’s precautionary measures.
