Octavio Gallotti, former Brazilian Supreme Court president, dies at 95
Octavio Gallotti, former president of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF), died on 26 July 2026 at age 95. He served on the STF from 1984 to 2000 and was its president between 1993 and 1995. Gallotti also headed the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) from 1994 to 1996 and was the last minister appointed to the STF during the military dictatorship, nominated by President João Figueiredo.
The STF announced a public viewing on 27 July in its Salão Branco, followed by burial on 28 July in Rio de Janeiro. In its statement, STF president Edson Fachin praised Gallotti’s “notable juridical culture, exemplary public spirit and unwavering commitment to the Constitution.” The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) also expressed condolences, highlighting his balanced, independent and technically rigorous work. Gallotti is survived by his wife Iára Chateaubriand Pereira Diniz Gallotti and children, including daughter Isabel Gallotti, a minister of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ).
