Former Brazilian Supreme Court President Octavio Gallotti Dies at 95 FAST-MOVING

Octavio Gallotti, former president of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF), died on 26 July 2026 in Brasília at the age of 95. He served on the STF from 1984 to 2000 and chaired the Court between 1993 and 1995. Gallotti also led the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) from 1994 to 1996 and was the last minister appointed to the STF during the military dictatorship, nominated by President João Figueiredo.

The STF announced a public viewing of his remains in the Salão Branco on 27 July, followed by burial on 28 July in Rio de Janeiro. STF president Edson Fachin and vice‑president Alexandre de Moraes praised his “notable juridical culture, exemplary public spirit and unwavering commitment to the Constitution.” Gallotti’s daughter, Isabel Gallotti, a minister of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), was also mentioned among his surviving family.
