Former Bulgarian presidents critique presidential election campaign

Former Bulgarian presidents Rosen Plevneliev and Georgi Parvanov have expressed concerns regarding the current presidential election campaign. Rosen Plevneliev emphasized that the quality of candidates and their strategic visions are more important than the number of contenders. He criticized the lack of substantive debate and long-term tactics, noting that the absence of meaningful discourse weakens popular sovereignty. Plevneliev advocated for a strong pro-European and pro-democratic presidential institution and suggested constitutional changes, including rethinking the role of caretaker governments and noting that no other developed EU democracy utilizes a vice-presidency.

Georgi Parvanov identified the heavy focus on compromising information and scandals as a major problem in the campaign. He noted that tension is likely to increase between the two election rounds but stressed the need to restore dialogue within the presidency. Parvanov highlighted the importance of communication between the government and the opposition on significant national development issues. He also called for a debate regarding the powers of the head of state, suggesting a return to certain previous presidential authorities.
