Former Carrefour CEO Daniel Bernard dies at 80

Daniel Bernard, the former chief executive of Carrefour, died during the night of 4–5 August 2026 at the age of 80 after a long illness, a family spokesperson announced. Bernard led Carrefour from 1998 to 2005, overseeing a major international expansion that included the 1999 merger with Promodès, which elevated the French retailer to the world’s second‑largest grocery chain behind Walmart. He introduced the “Carrefour quality filières” to strengthen long‑term agreements with agricultural producers.

Born into a modest family in the Nord region and a graduate of HEC, Bernard built his career at Socam Miniprix, Mammouth, Delta and the German Metro group before joining Carrefour as director general in 1992 and later as CEO. After leaving Carrefour, he chaired the British DIY group Kingfisher and the Dubai‑based Majid Al Futtaim Retail. Current Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard paid tribute on LinkedIn, calling Bernard a “builder, conqueror and visionary” and pledging to continue his legacy of an ambitious, globally‑oriented retailer. Controversy once surrounded his 2005 retirement package, which was later annulled by the courts.
