Former Central Governor Hugo Javier González Sent to Esperanza Prison

Former Central Department governor Hugo Javier González Alegre was transferred to the Unidad Penitenciaria Industrial Esperanza in Paraguay to begin a 10‑year prison term. The sentence stems from a conviction for embezzling Covid‑19 relief funds, with the court finding that more than 5.105 billion guaraníes were misused for fictitious projects during the pandemic.

González voluntarily presented himself to the National Police after an arrest warrant was issued. The Ministry of Justice authorized his transfer, and the conviction was handed down by the criminal court handling economic crimes, corruption and organized crime.
