Former CFR Cluj champion Gabi Mureșan dies; Răzvan Greu announces retirement

Gabi Mureșan, a three‑time Romanian league champion with CFR Cluj, died on 12 July 2024 after suffering a heart attack that caused him to drown in a lake near the village of Apold. An autopsy revealed an undiagnosed cardiac condition; he had been swimming after a sauna session with the local priest. Mureșan, 42, was a former midfielder for CFR Cluj, ASA Târgu Mureș and Gloria Bistriţa, earned nine caps for Romania, and later served as mayor of Apold.

Răzvan Greu, 31, announced his retirement from professional football this summer. The former Universitatea Cluj midfielder, who most recently played for ACS Mediaș, thanked the club and said he will pursue a new chapter in life. Greu’s career included spells at CS Mioveni, CSM Sighetu Marmației, FC Botoșani, Farul Constanța, Sepsi OSK, Unirea Slobozia, Unirea Dej, Gloria Buzău and MSE Târgu Mureș, and he helped Universitatea Cluj return to the second tier in 2017‑2018.
