Former Chilean MOP employee released after shooting at ministry building

Former Ministry of Public Works (MOP) employee Pearson Castillo, dismissed in 2023, was arrested after a series of threats toward MOP staff and a gunshot fired at the ministry's building in Santiago. Police seized two compressed‑air weapons, a rifle, and several knives, which will be examined for a link to the incident. No workers were injured.

During a detention‑control hearing, the court authorized Castillo’s release on the condition that he stay away from MOP facilities for 90 days while the investigation proceeds. The Public Ministry has formally charged him only with public disorder, while other possible charges remain under review.
