Shakib Al Hasan's house attacked after Sheikh Hasina's virtual press conference
On the night of 5 August 2026 (local time around 8:45 p.m.), the ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain and ex‑Awami League MP Shakib Al Hasan was hit by a petrol‑bomb attack in the Keshab Mor area of Magura town. Windows were smashed, the upper floor was set alight and the property was vandalised, but the house was unoccupied and no injuries were reported.
The assault came just hours after Shakib took part in a virtual press conference organised by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia in New Delhi. The event was hosted by ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who used the platform to reiterate her intention to return to Bangladesh in December, saying she was prepared to face arrest or death.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry condemned Hasina’s media appearance as an affront to the country’s sovereignty. The Awami League, Hasina’s party, described the attack as “the price of attending the press conference” and warned that Bangladesh was sliding into “neo‑fascism”. Earlier, the BNP, Islami Jamaat and the NCP had publicly threatened national media outlets over any coverage of the press conference. Police have launched an investigation but have not yet identified the perpetrators.
