Former Cuban Volleyball Star Alexeis Argilagos Dies in Italy at 51

Alexeis Argilagos, a former member of the Cuban men’s national volleyball team, died in Italy at the age of 51. He represented Cuba from 1997 to 2000, winning a bronze medal at the 1998 World Championship in Japan, a World League title the same year, a silver in the 1999 World League, and a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Argilagos also competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

After leaving Cuba, he spent more than two decades playing for numerous lower‑division clubs across Italy, retiring with Chieri in the 2021/22 season. He later worked as a Level II coach and earned a degree in Physical Education and Sports Sciences. His son, Bryan Argilagos, born in Italy, has become a professional setter, signing a two‑year contract with Cuneo Volley in the SuperLega.
