Former Cuenca Deputy Mayor Isidoro Gómez Cavero Dies at 63
Isidoro Gómez Cavero, a longtime physician and the deputy mayor of Cuenca, Spain, died on 22 July 2026 at age 63. Diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2024, he underwent two surgeries but the illness forced him to resign from the city council in June 2026. Gómez Cavero had founded the local political platform "Cuenca nos Une" in 2019, securing six council seats and becoming a key partner of the Socialist mayor Darío Dolz in municipal projects such as the Old Town elevators and the Carretería street renovation. He also led the handball club Balonmano Ciudad Encantada until 2025.
The city’s institutions and political leaders publicly mourned his passing. A solemn ringing of Cuenca’s Mangana Tower bells marked the news, and a funeral service was held at the Tanatorio de la Paz, followed by a mass at San Esteban church. Mayor Dolz described Gómez Cavero as a brother and friend, while regional president Emiliano García‑Page and the Castile‑La Mancha Popular Party president Paco Núñez also paid tribute, noting his dedication to a "better Cuenca."
