Former Doctor Who Showrunner Chris Chibnall Criticizes Series Hiatus

Former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall told BBC Radio Wales that he is disappointed the iconic sci‑fi series will be off‑air for an extended period. He said the pause is a “shame” for fans and especially for children who miss out on seeing a new Doctor, adding that the show’s future feels uncertain.

Chibnall noted that the BBC earlier announced no 2026 Christmas special and that current showrunner Russell T Davies is stepping down. The corporation has also placed Doctor Who out to competitive tender, allowing other production companies to bid for the franchise.

He expressed optimism that a new direction could revive the series for the next generation, but emphasized his sadness over the current lull.
