Former Dominican Minister Franklin García Fermín Launches Book on Mirabal Sisters' Murder
Former Education Minister and ex‑rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Franklin García Fermín, presented his new book Mi Padre y las Mariposas at the Auditorium Manuel del Cabral in the Biblioteca Pedro Mir, Santo Domingo. The autobiographical work draws on testimonies from his father, Dr. Marco Tulio García Paulino, who helped lift the bodies of the Mirabal sisters after their assassination on 25 November 1960 by the Trujillo regime, and from fellow official Rufino de la Cruz.
The ceremony, attended by hundreds of academics, students, writers and officials, included remarks from UASD rector Jorge Asjana David, writer Andrés L. Mateo, and Minou Tavárez Mirabal, daughter of Minerva Mirabal. García Fermín said the book seeks to preserve historical memory and promote democratic values for future generations.
