Former French and UK diplomats urge action on Israel-Palestine

A group of 102 former senior diplomats from France and the United Kingdom has issued a joint letter urging their governments to take decisive action regarding Israel’s policies in the Palestinian territories. The signatories, which include former UN ambassadors and Middle East directors, argue that both nations must work together to uphold international law and prevent the destruction of a viable Palestinian state.

The letter accuses the Israeli government of engaging in ethnic cleansing through house demolitions and settler violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It further claims that Israel is showing contempt for the rulings of the International Court of Justice and numerous UN Security Council resolutions. The diplomats have called for urgent measures, including potential bans on trade and arms sales, to press for the recognition and protection of Palestinian rights.

Reflecting on the historic roles of France and the UK in shaping the modern Middle East, the former envoys noted that both countries officially recognized a Palestinian state in 2025. They warned that the international community no longer views Israel as a genuine democracy and emphasized that accountability for alleged war crimes is essential to avoid accusations of double standards.
