Sarah Adwoa Safo injured in shooting at Kristo Asafo church ceremony in Ghana

On 21 June 2026, former Dome‑Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo was shot during a ceremony to introduce the new leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission in Accra. Her vehicle was hit by multiple rounds, and she was taken to hospital where she is recovering.

Family spokesperson Dr Emmanuel Boakye described the incident as a coordinated assassination attempt, alleging that about 48 bullets were fired at Safo’s car and that the shooters were directed by a man identified as Kwasi Agyei. He also linked the attack to an ongoing succession dispute within the church and its associated business empire, claiming involvement of Safo’s brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena.

Police investigations led to the arrest of several suspects, including Akofena. The Adenta Circuit Court later granted GH₵500,000 bail to nine accused persons, each with two sureties, while the case remains adjourned for further inquiry. A lawyer for the church claimed Safo fired the first shot and then crashed her car into a gate before the shooting escalated, a statement that is under investigation by state security agencies. The investigation continues with forensic analysis and witness testimony expected to clarify the chain of events.
