Former Graz Mayor Franz Hasiba Dies at 93

Franz Hasiba, former mayor of Graz and long‑time Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) politician, died on Sunday night at the age of 93. He would have celebrated his 94th birthday on Monday.

Hasiba served as mayor of Graz from 1983 to 1985, sharing the office in a "Halbzeitlösung" with SPÖ mayor Alfred Stingl. He later became deputy governor of Styria (1991‑93) and was the first president of the Styrian parliament from 1993 until 2000. After retiring from active politics in 2000, he remained involved with the ÖVP, leading its senior members’ club until 2017.
