Former Guayaquil security chief Fernando Cornejo seeks Assembly hearing on alleged camera ‘mirror room’

Former Segura EP director Fernando Cornejo, a key figure in the Guayaquil municipal security system, posted on X on 7 July 2026 requesting a remote appearance before the National Assembly’s Security Commission. He offered to testify voluntarily after the opposition Action Democratic National (ADN) bench demanded his presence over a suspected “mirror room” that could manipulate municipal surveillance cameras.

On 8 July 2026 Cornejo appeared virtually before the commission, denied the existence of an espionage network, and answered repeated questions about a recorded conversation with former president Rafael Correa. He said he met Correa once via Zoom to discuss traffic‑agent staffing data and denied any wrongdoing. The commission’s chair, Inés Alarcón, pressed him for written answers.

Interior Minister John Reimberg had earlier testified that a parallel structure, dubbed the “mirror room,” allowed privileged users to access, manipulate and extract video feeds from the municipal camera system, raising concerns about influence‑peddling and misappropriation. The investigation is proceeding as a case of illicit association, not espionage, and a prosecutor’s office is examining the matter.
